AHA/BHA/PHA
AHA, BHA, and PHA are exfoliating acids commonly used in skincare products to promote smoother, brighter, and clearer skin. While these exfoliating acids can be sourced naturally from various plant-based materials, they are also produced synthetically to ensure consistency, purity, and efficacy in skincare formulations. AHA (Alpha Hydroxy Acid): Alpha Hydroxy Acids are water-soluble acids often derived from fruits like citrus and sugar cane. Common AHAs include glycolic acid (derived from sugarcane) and lactic acid (derived from milk). AHAs work by exfoliating the skin's surface and promoting cell turnover, helping to improve the skin's texture, reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, and fading hyperpigmentation. BHA (Beta Hydroxy Acid): Beta Hydroxy Acid, or salicylic acid, is an oil-soluble acid commonly used to exfoliate inside the pores. This makes it particularly effective for oily, acne-prone skin as it can penetrate deep into the pores, unclog them, and reduce acne breakouts. BHA is also known for its anti-inflammatory properties, making it suitable for sensitive and acne-prone skin types. PHA (Polyhydroxy Acid): Polyhydroxy Acids are a newer generation of exfoliating acids that are gentler than AHAs and BHAs. PHAs, such as gluconolactone and lactobionic acid, exfoliate the skin's surface while providing hydrating and antioxidant benefits. They are suitable for sensitive skin types and can help improve skin texture, tone, and overall skin health.
